The 5th season of Thandukukhanya Junior League in Mkhondo ends this weekend with under 13 division already decided and two others to be decided on the final day. The final day is coincidentally football fans most anticipated date due to the Soweto derby between Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates in the semi-final of Telkom Knockout Cup on Saturday 24 November at Moses Mabhida Stadium, Durban.
Well before the Soweto derby another type of derby will be taking place to decide the league championship when Citizen FC takes on Flymingo United FC at Mandla Magudulela Stadium, Thandukukhanya, Mkhondo at 10am. It will be the final league game of the season between the rivals and the league decider for Thandukukhanya Junior League under 15 division. A win for Flymingo United FC will see them lift the trophy for the first time while it will be the first title loss for Citizen FC who have consistently won the under 15 league division since 2014. The two clubs are separated by goal difference both having 70 points after 25 matches played this season.
Mara Mara FC will have to score 25 goals to win the league on goal difference, impossible but it can be done.
Citizen FC has scored 149 goals conceding 18 while Flymingo United FC has scored 120 goals against 7 conceded. Expect a thriller when these two young sides meet on Saturday morning. In the under 13 division Flymingo United FC have technically won the league with just one match left to play having collected 67 points in 25 matches played. The 2nd placed team Mara Mara FC collected 64 points in the same number of matches played. Even if Flymingo United FC were to lose in the last game the huge favourable goal difference will favour Flymingo United. Mara Mara FC will have to score 25 goals to win the league on goal difference, impossible but it can be done. This will be Flymingo United FC coach Thokozani “Teekay” Hlatshwayo’s first development league trophy. He has previously won Thandukukhanya Promotion League in the 2015/16 &2016/17 with Total Football United FC. The under 13 junior league division has been ‘property’ of coach Sandile “Msandi” Kunene save for only one season when coach Sifiso Maphanga (now with Losta Stars FC) won it in 2016 with the now defunct One Touch FC.
The under 17 leaders Comet Riders FC have fought hard to be where they are right now in the league. The club has been doing battle with Citizen FC, Goodwill Promising, Mighty Commondale FC and Hintalo FC all season changing places at the top. They go into the last match of the season on top with 56 points from 25 matches. They will play their last match against 3rd placed side Hintalo FC (52pts). A loss to Hintalo FC and a win for Citizen FC will mean that Comet Riders FC will be playing role of makoti for the 4th time since the league began. The club has been finishing 2nd place to Citizen FC ever since the under 17 division began in 2015.
They have a better win rate in head to head matches againts Citizen FC including a 6-1 drubbing in July in the 2nd round, they drew 1-1 in the 1st round. Citizen FC is second with 54 points going into the last match against 7th placed Mangosuthu Cosmos FC. Mighty Commondale City FC (51pts) was also in the running for the league before losing 2-3 against Hintalo FC two weeks ago. They will now settle for a top 4 position if they win against Wilverdiend Stars FC and also depending on the results from the other teams in the top 4. The final matches will be played on Saturday 24 November 2018 at Mandla Magudulela Stadium, Thandukukhanya.
