The final match of iNtokozo Under 19 Cup did not produce a winner on Sunday 8 December 2019 after the match between Total Football United vs PR Wanderers FC was abandoned with just 10 minutes played in the 2nd half. The decision on the winner will only be finalized by the Mkhondo LFA when they sit with both clubs at a disciplinary hearing.
It was not easy for the two teams to reach the finals of the 16 team tournament which began on 30 November 2019. Total Football United FC went past to bitter rivals Citizen FC on penalties, won 3-0 against Comet Riders FC in the quarter finals before defeating Bayern Munich FC 3-1 in the semifinals. PR Wanderers FC began with a 3-1 win over Greenfield Rangers FC. They defeated Hintalo FC 3-1 in the quarter finals and won 4-3 on penalties against Junior United FC before setting up the final against Total Football United. The two teams met and played an exciting final at Mandla Magudulela Stadium. Total Football United drew first blood in the 25th minute of the 1st half to lead 1-0. The goal was scored by Siyabonga “Ibrah” Zwane with a header from a free kick taking the match into half time leading 1-0.
“We told both captains and the match referee that we cannot get involved in a match because the law does not allow us to. The referee is in charge of the game until the final whistle, we are only responsible for the administration side of things,”
The 2nd half of the match played for less than 15 minutes before PR Wanderers FC asked the match referee to stop the match because of water on the field. PR Wanderers captain and goalkeeper Magutshwa complained to the match official about water logged in the six yard area. The referee stopped the match and attended to the area that was water logged. Match officials swept the water away but it was not enough to convince PR Wanderers to continue with the match. The match officials went with both team captains to the tournament organizers from the Mkhondo LFA to consult and get guidance. They briefly spoke to the Mkhondo LFA Secretary Mr. Ntokozo Simelane and his Deputy Mr. Lindani Vundla on the side of the field. They went back to the pitch where they got involved in discussions until the match referee blew the whistle three times to signal the end of the match.
It was disappointing to see the tournament end in the manner it ended. This was the first negative incident to happen in all the 16 matches of the tournament. The Mkhondo LFA Secretary and founder of the youth tournament Mr. Ntokozo Simelane said they did not give any instruction during the brief meeting with the officials. “We told both captains and the match referee that we cannot get involved in a match because the law does not allow us to. The referee is in charge of the game until the final whistle, we are only responsible for the administration side of things,” he said. The secretary could not give us the final decision or the outcome of the match instead he told us that the Mkhondo LFA Disciplinary Committee will decide on what steps to take.
Earlier on Bayern Munich FC claimed 3rd place position with a 2-1 win over Junior United Brothers. There was no prize giving after the final match due to the unresolved issue now sitting with the Mkhondo LFA Disciplinary Committee. The disciplinary committee will sit on Wednesday 11 December 2019 at Masenkeni Stadium, Thandukukhanya at 5pm to discuss the matter and come up with a decision about the final. The winner of the tournament stands to win R5000 cash, a trophy, gold medals and a match ball while the runners up will receive R2000 cash, silver medals, training equipment and a match ball. The 3rd placed team Bayern Munich FC will receive R1000 cash, bronze medals and a match ball. The prizes will be given to the clubs once the Mkhondo LFA DC has decided on the winners.
