The 2018 edition of Mkhondo Club Development Games have been set to play on Sunday 16 September 2018 at Thandukukhanya, Mkhondo Local Municipality. Four sport codes i.e. Basketball, Netball, Volleyball and football for both boys and girls will be playing for the 4th time since they were started by the Mkhondo Sports Council in the year 2015. The venue is Thokozani Sports Centre for Basketball, Netball & Volleyball. Masenkeni and Mandla Magudulela Stadiums will host soccer games from 8am on Sunday 16 September 2018.
The prizes for Netball, Basketball& Volleyball have been reduced to one kit per code due to lack of visible sporting activities. The Department of Culture, Sport & Recreation sport officer Mr Alistair Manzini who serves the area of Mkhondo Local Municipality on behalf of the department said they looked at participation in determining prizes. “We need proof that a particular sport is played before we can procure prizes. So far football is the only code that has been complying by sending team lists after games. We could have given more to football but we are giving the other codes to regroup and be active,” he said. He warned the other sport representatives to pull up their socks by being visible. “In future we will be forced to use the Club Development Games budget only for soccer because they are visible and comply with the requirements. This year we will give support to all the codes with the hope that clubs will develop interest in Netball, Basketball and Volleyball, he warned.”
It is still not clear how many number of teams are going to participate in Netball. The Mkhondo Netball Federation has only existed by hearsay. The executive members are not really known.
The Mkhondo Basketball Federation have confirmed only three (3) teams that will play on Sunday. Six (6) Volleyball teams have confirmed. The organisers said they will allow clubs to join free on the day of the finals if they arrive very early before the games start.
“In future we will be forced to use the Club Development Games budget only for soccer because they are visible and comply with the requirements.”
Football is still the leading sport code in Mkhondo Local Municipality and the most played. The 2018/19 season had close to 100 clubs in Mkhondo Promotion League playing in different areas of the municipality. Eight men soccer teams will play a top 8 tournament at Masenkeni and Mandla Magudulela Stadium. The criteria for clubs to participate in men soccer is determined by Mkhondo LFA as the custodians of football in Mkhondo Local Municipality. “Each Sub LFA in good standing must send a club to the games i.e. 7 teams plus the defending champions. A Sub LFA in good standing means a Sub LFA that has affiliated for the 2018/19 season to participate in all football activities under Mkhondo Local Football Association,” said the secretary Mr Ntokozo Simelane.
Ladies soccer will involve only three clubs after three (3) time champions Losta Stars Ladies FC pulled out of the games due to lack of playing cards. The clubs present at the plenary meeting decided on using the Regional Women League playing cards to avoid use of guest players from outside Mkhondo. The club representative Tenkhosi Dlamini said they do not have a team playing at Regional Women League which led to their withdrawal from the tournament. The three (3) ladies teams are Hintalo Stars FC, Dube United Ladies FC and Moleko Stars FC from eMabola, Mkhondo. The teams will win prizes sponsored by the Dept. of Culture, Sports and Recreation (DCSR). The prizes will include soccer jerseys for the two (2) finalists, trophies, medals and match balls in both ladies and men divisions.
