Tables turned upside down in the last week of Thandukukhanya Promotion League when the league changed hands from long time log leaders Total Football United FC to the eventual champions Citizen FC at the last day of the league on Sunday 05 May 2019. Citizen FC won the league on goal difference after the club was awarded three points by the Mkhondo LFA Disciplinary Committee in their protest against PR Barcelona in a case which had dragged since November last year.
The Mkhondo LFA Disciplinary Committee awarded the points to Citizen after finding PR Barcelona FC guilty of fielding ineligible players in their 1-1 draw played in November last year. PR Barcelona used players from the SAB League team which is not allowed in the rules of the Mkhondo Promotion League. It was the 4th occasion that PR Barcelona failed to attend the hearing which led to the decision to award the match to Citizen. The points sent them level with Total Football United at 77 points each after playing 30 matches. Citizen led with a superior goal difference of 106 having scored a record 123 goals in 30 matches this season.
"We have noted PR Barcelona’s non attendance of the DC hearings since last year. The confession and request made by PR Barcelona to use the same players at the recent Mkhondo Easter Diski Challenge confirmed our suspicions that they were guilty,"
The chairperson of the disciplinary committee noted PR Barcelona’s absence which was seen as a sign of guilt resulting in the docking of points. "We have noted PR Barcelona’s non attendance of the DC hearings since last year. The confession and request made by PR Barcelona to use the same players at the recent Mkhondo Easter Diski Challenge confirmed our suspicions that they were guilty," said Mr Mduduzi Nkosi the Chairperson of the disciplinary committee. Mr Nkosi was referring to the Easter Diski Challenge that played recently, a tournament for promotion league and open clubs. PR Barcelona coach Mr DJ Mshololo asked to be allowed to use some of his players from the SAB League team who had playing cards to play in the promotion league. The request was granted because the club had lost players to injury after a car accident when they were travelling to play an SAB League match against Shooters FC in Carolina earlier this year.
Citizen Captain Lungelo “Dukuduku” Nkosi and Coach Sandile Kunene represented the club at the hearing and they both breathed a heavy sigh of relief and tried to hide their excitement after the decision was made to their favour. The club will represent the stream B of Thandukukhanya Promotion League at the promotional playoffs to be played in KwaNgema next Saturday. The stream A league will be represented by four time league champions and 2015/16 Gert Sibande Promotional champions Comet Riders FC. The club came back to the promotion league after selling their SAB League status last season due to financial difficulties. They are now in a good chance of going back to the SAB League if they manage to win at the playoffs.
Other teams that have qualified for the playoffs include Amsterdam Barcelona FC who has won back to back the Amsterdam Promotion League title. Highland Rocks FC of Saul Mkhizeville Promotion League has won the league for the 3rd time with Dragon FC as runners up. They will be joined by Flying Stars FC from Sinethemba Promotion League based in Saul Mkhizevile after winning the league with one match to go leading 2nd placed Rangers FC with four points. There is a disciplinary case involving defending champions HiFi FC at Ngema Dirkiesdorp Promotion League that may change things at the top of the table currently occupied by Kunene FC. The league fixtures ended with Kunene FC as champions but HiFi FC has lodged an appeal with the Mkhondo LFA DC. The club is appealing a decision that ruled against them regarding their match against Peace Lovers FC which they lost via a walkover. The case will be heard on Thursday 09 May 2019.
