Netball interest is fast growing amidst the Covid-19 pandemic which has seen all sport activities put on hold until recently when government relaxed some of the rules and allowed athletes to train. The sport made a return with two (2) back to back mini tournaments taking place on Saturdays 05& 12 September 2020 at Thokozani Sport Centre, Thandukukhanya in Mkhondo.

The first tournament was won by Rockstar NC after defeating their babies Young Rockstar in the final. The two teams had been drawn in different groups (A&B) at start of the games. They emerged as group winners to face each other in the final which the older sisters won by a convincing 9-4. Group A teams were: Rockstar from Saul Mkhizeville, Young Stars from Mabola and Bushman from Iswepe. Group B had: Young Rockstar, Eagles from Phola Park, Limited NC. The second tournament featured less experienced players with more youthful players participating. The previous champions and more experienced Rockstar NC did not participate.

Netball will indeed claim its rightful place as the second most played team sport judging by the enthusiasm shown by the players, clubs and organizers.

There were seven (7) teams in total including visitors Springbok NC from Msinyane in the border between Mkhondo and Pongola. Again the teams were divided into two groups with Group A having three (3) teams: Young Stars from Mabola, Springbok from Msinyande and Eagles B side. Group B had Eagles from Phola Park, Troublemaker from Daliya, Cheaters and Flying Angels from Saul Mkhizeville. The group winners Young Stars vs Eagles met in the final. Though exciting at beginning the final became one sided towards the end leaving Eagles comfortable winners of the tournament. There were no prizes for both tournaments. “We decided to arrange both tournaments to encourage the kids that have been training to keep fit. We also preparing to start with the current season even though Covid-19 has taken space and time,” said Mr Sibonelo Mkhwanazi the chairperson of Mkhondo Netball Association.
