Volleyball was popular in the early nineties when playing courts behind Ndlela Secondary School were still new and the community united by the harsh conditions of apartheid. Sport was the only drug to keep sane and living a healthy lifestyle. The recent refurbishment of the playing courts at Thokozani Sport Centre, Thandukukhanya in Mkhondo has revived one of the community’s favourite sport codes.
It is no surprise that volleyball is making a steady comeback to the forefront of sport activities happening in Mkhondo. This is seen by the increased number of games the local team Thanda Volleyball Club has played in recent times including participating in the Gert Sibande Volleyball League 2019 season. The team is made up of young working class adults and is currently the only active volleyball club in Mkhondo.
“We are still discussing the prizes. At the moment we have a trophy donated by Wolf Da Brand and cash from teams’ affiliations,”
The club will be hosting a seven (7) team volleyball tournament on Saturday 3 October 2020. The venue is the recently rehabilitated Thokozani Sport Centre in front of Qhubekani LP School next to Ndawonye Primary School and a stone throw away from Ndlela Secondary School in Thandukukhanya, Mkhondo. The venue itself has played a major role in the revival of volleyball in Thandukukhanya since it was re-opened to the public in the year 2018. The geographical location makes it easily accessible, user friendly and safe for children to play sport. Thanda VC captain Vusiwe Dube said they are expecting six (6) teams from outside Mkhondo to play in the tournament.
The clubs are the Eagles VC from Wakkerstroom, Flamingos VC from Ermelo, NPG Blockbusters from oPhongolo, Dumbe VC, Middelburg VC and Mayflower VC. The seven (7) teams including the hosts Thanda VC will begin playing at 9am using two playing courts. The captain said the prizes were not finalised at the time of publication of this article. “We are still discussing the prizes. At the moment we have a trophy donated by Wolf Da Brand and cash from teams’ affiliations,” he said. Talking to the team captain about the prizes you get a sense of not really caring about them but the enthusiasm to be at court and play on Saturday is galore.
