Young aspiring artists have responded to the call from the office of the executive mayor to take charge of their destiny by creating jobs using their God given talents. On the 25th June 2020 a new committee for visual arts artists was formed to look into the developme nt of visual art in the area jurisdiction of Mkhondo Local Municipality. The meeting was held at Thokozani Sport Center, Thokozani where an interim committee of five (5) members were elected and tasked with developing objectives and programs for visual arts eMkhondo.
The meeting decided on naming the committee as the Mkhondo Visual Art Council to look after the interests of all artists doing visual art. Interim committee member who is also a rapper Khulekani 'Coolegun' Dlamini described visual art as "any art that can be viewed or seen with the naked eye e.g. Fine art, painting, sculptures, drawing, design etc." He said there are many talented young people that stand to benefit if they organise themselves as artists. The meeting was attended by Mr Ntokozo Simelane from the Executive Mayor’s office who assured the artists full cooperation at the Mkhondo Local Municipality. The Executive Mayor of Mkhondo Local Municipality the honourable Cllr. Vusi Motha established the Social Services Unit which reports directly to his office in order to assist with the development of Culture, Arts, Sport and Recreation. The ball is in the artists’ court to improve and develop programs for the visual art scene.
“Our Aim is to make this place inspire and motivate those who are gifted.”
Mkhondo Visual Art Council also announced their first project as a group of visual artist. They have set their eyes on the establishment of a visual art studio where artists can practice their art and get access to painting materials. The artists have identified the mostly dilapidated and dirty building in front of Thandukukhanya Hostel at Sgodiphola to be used as an art studio for all young aspiring artists. The building which used to operate as a satellite police station during apartheid has never been used since it was vacated just after the dawn of democracy.
All Visual Art artists will meet on Mandela Day 18 July 2020 at Thandukukhanya Hostel to start the project by cleaning and setting up mini art exhibitions featuring the international icon former African National Congress President Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela. The young artists have seen something that many have failed to see about the building. They have vowed to keep it clean and attractive to the eyes of the community. They have set themselves a long term goal of establishing a gallery where all artists from Mkhondo will be able to display their works of art and earn money from it.
“We will love to have an art gallery here eMkhondo but that is a huge thing. We will focus on growing the visual art scene for now by encouraging artists’ development. Once we are done with that then we will move on to establishing a gallery. Our Aim is to make this place inspire and motivate those who are gifted,” said Khulekani Dlamini. The newly established committee gave us a list of members but could not provide their positions. Visual Art Council interim leaders are Khulekani Dlamini, Mooreen Hadebe, Dumisani Zikalala, Musa Matukana and Samkelo Yende. They represent close to twenty (20) artists ranging from technical designers, sculptures and the majority fine art artists.
